  • Correcting Mistakes on the Credit Report

Because credit scores are based on your individual record, it is very important to get a copy of your credit report at least yearly to make sure that all information is being correctly reported. If the information is inaccurate, you need to take steps to correct it. Unfortunately, this is up to you to do.

All credit providers send regular reports on their accounts to all the credit bureaus. This reporting usually occurs on a monthly basis. Because all credit providers don’t report to all the credit bureaus, it is best to obtain reports from each bureau. If you are married or have joint credit with someone else, it is a good idea to get a report for each of you.

If you find errors on a credit report, you must follow the directions that are included with your credit report. Usually you must first write to the credit bureau and advise them of your dispute. You will need to be able to provide proof that the disputed account is paid or other information about the claim. The creit bureau will then contact the creditor and they will usually have 30 days to respond. If the credit provider agrees that ther is an error, it will tell the bureau to delete the item from the report. You should allow at least 30days after your initial contact for the credit bureau to investigate.
